WORK
CARRIED OUT Much improved signage and advisory lane markings
at all 4 junctions. Double white lines (mandatory non-overtaking)
with central "cats eyes" on just past the Mill road
junction on approximately half a mile of twisting road (the
"chicane") It is hoped that the traffic police can
ensure some enforcement of this new safety feature.

Work starts on the agreed Road Safety
scheme. Improved signage erected at all thr road junctions
April ERYC announce a Road Safety scheme will commence
on Great Gutter Lane in early May 2009 . The works include improved
lining and signing, with amendments to the centreline markings
and the installation of road studs and verge hazard markers.
We are still pushing
for a reduction in speed limits, however some progress has been
made (with the assistance in particular of Cllr. Julie Abraham)

Feb At vehicle rolled into a field at Melton
Bottoms, probably due to icy weather conditions, driver error
or a combination of both.
2008
December
- ERYC announce that safety improvements mentioned above to
Great Gutter Lane are to be accelerated.

November Incident at Dale Road Junction. A horse bolted
from a side lane onto Great Gutter lane, causing a vehicle to
swerve and collide with another.
November
South Hunsley Ward Councillors write to Director of Environmental
& Neighbourhood Services calling for implementation of the
recommended measures as soon as practically possible in the
current financial year. Also ask for further consideration to
a speed reduction on the road, at least on the part of the road
from Melton to 600 metres north of Stonepit Road.
September
17 - Another fatality
- no other vehicle involved.

30 ERYC Officers considered the petition and in June
reported back recommending
signage improvements and also an extension of the white double
centre lines and bi-directional studs. The estimated cost is
£10,000 and the scheme was put forward for assessment
for funding. The scheme does not recommend any amendment to
the speed limit on Great Gutter Lane.

19 A Ferriby resident reports "A driver overtook
5 cars heading straight for us. We were lucky no one was behind
us and we could slow right down to let him get through the narrow
gap. After all the publicity I give up!"

30 The petition
was submitted with a covering letter and presented by Graham
Latter to the Environment & Transport Overview & Scrutiny
Committee. Ward Councillors Julie Abraham and
Angela Ibson also spoke and strongly supported the proposals.

11 A meeting took place with Peter Minoughan, General
Manager of Omya Quarry Plant. Omya fully support this initiative
since they have a responsibility to their Tanker Drivers and
to employees using the road.
Jan
11 A meeting took place with PC Glen Denis of Humberside
Police Traffic Division. PC Denis made several suggestions on
some of the possible measures that might be appropriate. He
also indicated that some Police activity along the road would
be implemented.
2007
November A petition was circulated to demand that East
Riding Highways Department urgently consider what can be done
to improve the safety aspects of Great Gutter Lane. The petition
received 632 signatures from local residents and from employees
of Omya Quarry Plant.
