"Great Gutter Lane" - Road Safety Petition

The stretch of road from Melton to Willerby is known locally as Great Gutter Lane - going west it actually comprises Great Gutter Lane, Swanland Dale and Melton Bottom. Over the years it has seen many accidents and considerably more "near misses" over many years. Drivers coming off the new interchange at Ferriby find themselves on what is a country road with hidden bends and dips.

In 2007 there was at least 6 reported crashes including 2 fatal incidents and a 3rd serious incident which thankfully did not result in fatalities.

On September 17 2008 a man died after the BMW car he was driving crossed the road and rolled onto its roof in a field on the other side. This occurred on the start of the "chicane" stretch

While accepting that "generally there are no dangerous roads - only dangerous drivers" this does not mean that some improvements to the road cannot be made.

Police enforcement of the existing 60 mph speed limit might also be helpful.

June

WORK CARRIED OUT Much improved signage and advisory lane markings at all 4 junctions. Double white lines (mandatory non-overtaking) with central "cats eyes" on just past the Mill road junction on approximately half a mile of twisting road (the "chicane") It is hoped that the traffic police can ensure some enforcement of this new safety feature.

May
Work starts on the agreed Road Safety scheme. Improved signage erected at all thr road junctions

April
ERYC announce a Road Safety scheme will commence on Great Gutter Lane in early May 2009 . The works include improved lining and signing, with amendments to the centreline markings and the installation of road studs and verge hazard markers. We are still pushing for a reduction in speed limits, however some progress has been made (with the assistance in particular of Cllr. Julie Abraham)

5 Feb At vehicle rolled into a field at Melton Bottoms, probably due to icy weather conditions, driver error or a combination of both.

2008
December - ERYC announce that safety improvements mentioned above to Great Gutter Lane are to be accelerated.

22 November Incident at Dale Road Junction. A horse bolted from a side lane onto Great Gutter lane, causing a vehicle to swerve and collide with another.

November South Hunsley Ward Councillors write to Director of Environmental & Neighbourhood Services calling for implementation of the recommended measures as soon as practically possible in the current financial year. Also ask for further consideration to a speed reduction on the road, at least on the part of the road from Melton to 600 metres north of Stonepit Road.

September 17 - Another fatality - no other vehicle involved.

May 30 ERYC Officers considered the petition and in June reported back recommending signage improvements and also an extension of the white double centre lines and bi-directional studs. The estimated cost is £10,000 and the scheme was put forward for assessment for funding. The scheme does not recommend any amendment to the speed limit on Great Gutter Lane.

Feb 19 A Ferriby resident reports "A driver overtook 5 cars heading straight for us. We were lucky no one was behind us and we could slow right down to let him get through the narrow gap. After all the publicity I give up!"

Jan 30 The petition was submitted with a covering letter and presented by Graham Latter to the Environment & Transport Overview & Scrutiny Committee. Ward Councillors Julie Abraham and Angela Ibson also spoke and strongly supported the proposals.

Jan 11 A meeting took place with Peter Minoughan, General Manager of Omya Quarry Plant. Omya fully support this initiative since they have a responsibility to their Tanker Drivers and to employees using the road.

Jan 11 A meeting took place with PC Glen Denis of Humberside Police Traffic Division. PC Denis made several suggestions on some of the possible measures that might be appropriate. He also indicated that some Police activity along the road would be implemented.
